Welcome

The Desert Lotus Zen Community serves the Greater Phoenix area in Arizona, creating a culture for transformation through Zen meditation, koan study, inquiry, conversation, and the arts.

We are affiliated with Pacific Zen Institute (PZI) of Santa Rosa, CA, and look to John Tarrant, Roshi, and Rachel Howlett, Sensei, of PZI for direction and guidance.

On Monday evenings, 7:15 PM to 8:30 PM, we hold a meditation and sutra service at the Valley Unitarian Church, 6400 W. Del Rio St., Chandler, Arizona, in Building B of the Office/Classroom complex on the west side of the parking lot. On Thursdays from 6:15 PM to 7:15 PM, we meet there for sitting meditation only. Look for our schedule of monthly meetings, weekend workshops, and retreats in Events.

August 23, 2008 - Koan & "Meditation & Creativity: Practices that Refresh and Free the Mind" Workshop with John Tarrant, Roshi

In Chandler on Saturday, August 23, John Tarrant, Roshi, of the Pacific Zen Institute will lead a koan and meditation workshop titled "Meditation and Creativity: Practices that Refresh and Free the Mind." The workshop starts at 9:30 AM and ends at 4:00 PM. On Sunday, John will work with individual DLZ members on their practice. Please note John will not hold the usual Friday evening talk.

This retreat looks at meditation as a creative act. The idea of practice is a way to put a new possibility in your life on an every day basis. This is both healing and refreshing. A spiritual practice anchors us in the greater current and meaning of life; it also allows us to approach life as we would a work of art, something that doesn't have to make sense to be beautiful. Creative leaps are often very small shifts that have large effects because a spiritual practice allows us to notice them. In this retreat a new approach to Zen koans encourages us to fall into the beauty that we meet every day. No previous experience with koans is necessary to attend.
